Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA)

Understanding IRMAA (overview)

IRMAA stands for Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount. It's a regulatory surcharge added to your standard Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) and Part D (Prescription Drug coverage) monthly base premiums if your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) trends above designated statutory thresholds.

The Social Security Administration reviews federal tax filings from two years prior to determine whether sliding-scale adjustments apply to your current structure status thresholds.

Current Status:

An additional charge some high-income individuals must pay on top of their standard Medicare premiums for Parts B and D. It applies to those whose modified adjusted gross income exceeds $109,000 for individuals or $218,000 for couples, based on their tax return from two years prior.
